USTP hosts int'l confab on research, innovation, and investment

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 22--The University of the Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) hosted the International Conference on Research, Innovation, and Investment (ICRII) on May 17-20, 2021 with the theme ‘The Emerging Role of Research, Innovation, and Investment in a Disruptive World.’

ICRII is an annual gathering of researchers, innovators, investors, policy-makers and other thought leaders to discuss innovative ideas, current and emerging trends, best practices, and other developments in a particular field and pursue a progressive research and innovation ecosystem.

The conference featured various advances in research and innovation across disciplines. It provided research scientists, industry and government professionals an avenue to discuss and present results of a scientific inquiry, find opportunity to utilize and commercialize research outputs, draw local and international investors of research-based business potentials, and establish research collaboration and linkage relation with institutions or agencies across the globe.

ICRII offered a series of scientific lectures from domain experts, plenary and keynote speeches from exemplary speakers, and scholarly presentations from local and international researchers.

Among the invited speakers were Dr. Tirso A. Ronquillo, President of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges, to talk about "Democratizing Research and Innovation towards a Sustainable Ecosystem;" Dr. Donnie Adams, Senior Lecturer at the University of Malaya in Malaysia, to lead a discussion on "Quality Assurance in Research;" Dr. Angela Yung-Chi Hou, Professor at the National Chengchi University in Taiwan, to share her expertise on "Internationalization of Research and Innovation for a World Class University;" and Dr. Aaron Raymond A. See, Innovation Manager at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, to give a lecture on "Brain-Computer Interface."

Another highlight of the conference was the innovation and investment forum wherein faculty and students pitch their own startup innovation to potential investors. The forum aims to provide the stakeholders an avenue to exchange ideas and discuss the possibility to further develop startup ideas and make them utilizable and commercializable in either early-stage or fertile ecosystems.

The participants were also treated to a new conference experience through the Virtual World Cafe for Networking Platforms to encourage fellowship in specialized areas, drafting and signing of memorandum of understanding, and other collaborative endeavors.

The conference also aimed to provide the participants an opportunity to know more about the University as an institution of science and technology: its vision and mission, strategic goals, social responsibility, flagship programs, expertise as well as role in the society and innovation ecosystem.

Educators, researchers, innovators, and investors from the academe, industry and government agencies are invited to join and share new trends, methods as well as innovative solutions to problems. Participants and stakeholders are expected to engage in various transactional dialogues to express their intent to take part in democratizing research and innovation as well as define their role in effectively and efficiently delivering socioeconomic benefits of research and innovation.
