Red Cross conducts in-house blood letting

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, May 25 (PIA) -- The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Cagayan Chapter has resorted to in-house blood letting activities to meet the demand for blood transfusions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aileen Torres, Chapter administrator, said that there is a high demand for blood units for patients undergoing transfusions, but because of the restrictions implemented due to the pandemic, they could hardly conduct massive blood collections in the municipalities.

"That is why we thought of having in-house blood lettings wherein willing donors [can] go to our office to donate blood. Our schedule will be every tuesday and thursday," Torres said.

She also added that some of donors are pre-registered, but they will accommodate walk-ins provided that all COVID-19 protocols and guidelines are strictly observed.

Torres said that they will also give incentives to successful donors such as five kilograms of rice, t-shirts, and hygiene kits.

"This is also our way [of helping and contributing] to ease the burden of the people in this pandemic, especially those who are crying out for help [in terms of] blood transfusions. We will try our very best to meet the demands because other blood banks are also running out of stocks," Torres said.

She further encouraged fit and healthy individuals to donate and be a savior of one's life by sharing their blood.

On the other hand, Torres also said that they continue with their saliva specimen collections as an alternative to RT-PCR testings for COVID-19.

"Our schedule for the saliva collection is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. All specimens are brought to PRC-Isabela's molecular laboratory for processing," she added.

Torres further said that the average number of their clients for the saliva test is also increasing as negative COVID-19 test results are now a requirement for travel, job placements, overseas work, and others. (JCK/OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
