DAVAO CITY (PIA) - The long-awaited Pfizer vaccines are being rolled out in different vaccination sites across the country. One of the initial vaccination areas is in Davao City.

The vaccination site at the Southern Philippine Medical Center (SPMC) is aiming to vaccinate 300 persons today (May 17).

Dr. Ricardo Audan, medical director of the SPMC said the vaccines will be used for senior citizens and kidney transplant patients as the Pfizer vaccine is said to be the only vaccines good for kidney transplant patients.

“Nagapasalamat mi kay mao kin ang ginahulat sa mga kidney transplant patients, kay kini lang ata ang mga bakuna na pwede sa ilaha (We are grateful since these is awaited by the kidney transplant patients, since this is said to be the vaccines allowed to them),” Dr. Audan said.

According to Dr. Audan the SPMC was chosen as the vaccination center for Pfizer vaccines as they are the only one in the region which has an ultra low temperature freezer capable of storing vaccines at -80 degrees Celsius, which is the required storage temperature for the Pfizer vaccines.

Dr. Audan said the ultra low freezer at SPMC can store around 50,000 vaccines vials.

The region is also expecting to receive additional vials of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. According to Department of Health Undersecretary Abdullah Dumama Jr. there will be an incoming shipment of 200,000 vials arriving this first month of June.

“Secretary Galvez called me the other night. He said we expect 200,000 more (Pfizer vaccine vials) in the first week of June,” Dumama bared the call from  Sec. Carlito Galvez Jr. chief implementer of the Inter Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Usec. Dumama said an ultra low temperature freezer from the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) will arrive very soon in SPMC to beef up storage capacity for Pfizer vaccines. The incoming freezer can store around 200,000 to 300,000 vials. (PIA/RG Alama)
