Learning continues in Tuguegarao City Jail amid pandemic

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, May 19 (PIA) – The pandemic did not hinder learners of the Bureau of Jail Management  and Penology (BJMP) – Tuguegarao City Jail Male Dorm to continue learning through the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program of the Department of Education (DepEd).

This will soon entitle the learners to receive their Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Assessment and Certification.

ALS teacher Laura Miming said originally, there were 22 learners here but only seven were left after the rest received their accreditation and finally out of the jail.

Miming said ALS learners are not exempted from the module-based learning so that they will be given the accreditation which they can use after they will be released.

Since face-to-face is not allowed between the learners and the teacher, Miming said she maintained close contact with personnel in-charge who are assisting the learners during module sessions.

Meanwhile,  Jail Warden PCI Rodolfo Arao said learning must continue amidst pandemic as this is one of the bureau’s mandate under the persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) Development program.

“We ensure that while they learn, minimum health protocols are strictly observed especially when we provide guidance and assistance to them,” he said.

The PDL Welfare and Development Program is a set of physical, psychological, intellectual, vocational, and spiritual activities or interventions that facilitate inmates’ well-being and enhancement.

Activities under this include provision of basic needs, services and activities on health, livelihood, education, sports and recreation, visitation, paralegal and religious adapting the Therapeutic Community Modality program as a model in the implementation. (MDCT/GVB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
