DOST-XI supports setup of COVID-19 testing facilities in region

DAVAO CITY, May 19 (PIA)- The Department of Science and Technology-XI is fully supportive in the establishment of COVID-19 testing facilities in the region.

DOST-XI Regional Director Anthony Sales during his guesting at One Davao on COVID-19 online presser today (May 19) said the initiatives of the DOST-XI and its partner stakeholders is to mirror the efforts of the national government in beefing up COVID-19 testing capabilities.

One of the initiatives is a collaboration with the University of the Philippines-Mindanao in training analysts in the different laboratories.

“We collaborated with UP Mindanao University of the Philippines Mindanao because UP Mindanao hosts the UP Genome Center,” Dir. Sales said.

The training includes online training on molecular biology principles of SARS-CoV-2 particularly RT/PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing which is the gold standard of testing for confirming COVID-19.

“May kasamang hands on training para masanay ang mga analysts sa pagtetest ( We include hands-on training so our analysts will get used to actual testings), Dir. Sales said.

Apart from trainings the DOST-XI is also supportive of other stakeholders ‘efforts to build their own molecular laboratories.

Among these include the molecular laboratory of the Davao de Oro Provincial Government located in the town of Montevista and also a similar facility built by the Philippine National Police-Police Regional Office XI in Panacan.

Dir. Sales said with the preparation of a COVID-19 surge there is a need to have many testing facilities in the region.

After the pandemic these molecular laboratories will also serve a purpose in research and development in the field of virology.

“Hopefully after pandemic these testing facilities will form part of the network of laboratories we want to establish in Mindanao for research and development purposes,” Dir. Sales said.

He said these can become satellite laboratories for the planned Virology Institute of the Philippines which the national government is planning to establish. (PIA/RG Alama)
