DOH-10 urges private hospitals to provide ICU for COVID-19 patients

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 23 (PIA) - The critical care utilization in Cagayan de Oro City is nearing tipping point at 62 percent prompting the Department of Health (DOH)-10 to ask all level 2 private hospitals to reserve 20 percent of their authorized bed capacity and public hospitals 30-50 percent bed capacity for COVID-19 patients.

Llacuna expressed this concern during the CORDS X Podcast with Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, explaining that most referrals are being sent to Cagayan de Oro so they set a meeting with these hospitals and favorable got their commitments.

“We are now monitoring and we are very glad that many local private hospitals commit to increase their ICU beds,” Llacuna said.

There is a need to inoculate 70 percent of the population to attend herd immunity against the virus.

Region 10 has a total population of 10 million and the immunizable population is 5.6 million. With this, Llacuna said DOH-10 aims to vaccinate about 4 million to get herd immunity.

Presently, the region is still vaccinating A1, A2 and a little of A3 population. A1 is frontline health workers with some 84,733 individuals.

So far, the first doses of the vaccine were already given to 69,104 or about 82 percent.  Those who got complete doses account for 28,172 only, as they are still in the process of giving the second dose of Sinovac and AstraZeneca.

“We are assuring them the safety of both brands of vaccine, available here in the region: Sinovac and Astrazeneca,” Llacuna said.

The local government units (LGUs) and the press play a very good role in convincing the people of the safety of the vaccine and to continuously call on them to practice BIDA solusyon, which is still the most effective strategy against the virus.

Transmission rate is high in Northern Mindanao for the last two weeks, Llacuna said, so he campaigned for BIDA plus BAKUNA as the most effective preventive measure. (JMORucat/PIA10)
