Scholarship for Filipino war vets' descendants ongoing

ILOILO CITY, April 13 (PIA) - - The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) continues to make education accessible to descendants of Filipino war veterans through its educational benefit program despite the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Glen Castanares of PVAO-Iloilo, in a recent interview over PIA Kapihan Regionwide radio program, said application for the scholarship program is ongoing for school year 2021 to 2022.

The scholarship is open to direct descendants of veterans of World War II including those who fought in Vietnam and Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK) or Philippine Civic Action Group. Direct descendants refer to children and grandchildren of veterans.

Each veteran is entitled to one scholar who, once qualified, can enroll in any four-year course under the program.

Qualified scholars are also entitled to a financial subsidy of P40,000 annually or P20,000 per semester.

Castanares advised interested applicants to prepare the documentary requirements such as the veteran's military service record, proof of affiliation, claimant’s valid IDs and student ward’s school credentials, among others.

He said the scholarship program is among the benefits provided to Filipino veterans based on Section 3 or Republic Act 6948 or an Act Standardizing and Upgrading the Benefits for Military Veterans and Their Dependents as amended by Section 1 of Republic Act 7696.

Other benefits given to veterans administered by PVAO are old-age pension, death benefit, disability benefit, and burial assistance.

For additional information on the scholarship program, Castanares said they can be reached through telephone number (033) 320-4495 and on Facebook through Pvao Fseo-Iloilo. (JSC/laf/PIA6 Iloilo)
