Lanao del Norte coco farmers nominate reps for PCA Board

ILIGAN CITY, Apr. 22 (PIA)--Coconut farmer organizations, associations, and cooperatives in Lanao del Norte selected Wednesday their contenders for the farmer representatives in the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) Governing Board.

The selection process was facilitated by the Provincial Nomination and Screening Committee led by PCA-10 regional manager Manuel Octobre who stated the importance of the selection process to ensure that the farmer representative nominee is indeed a voice for the coconut farmers.

"Ito ay kinakailangan dahil sa pinirmahan ni President Duterte na batas, ito ang Republic Act 11524 o ang Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act. Sabi kasi ng batas, kailangan e reconstitute ang PCA Governing Board," he explained.

Under the law, three farmer representatives — one each from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao must sit on the PCA board together with the Secretaries of Agriculture, Finance, Budget, Science and Technology, and Trade, and the PCA administrator.

Octobre said the President will appoint the three farmer representatives from a list of four nominees from each island group.

"So ang ginawa natin ngayon ay nagselect tayo ng tatlong farmer nominees representing the province of Lanao del Norte at actually all the five provinces under region 10 ay gagawa din ng ganito. In the end, four farmer representatives from Mindanao, Luzon at Visayas yun ang silbing 12 names na ipapadala kay President at saka siya na ang pipili kung sino ang uupo. We are going sa process sa selection kasi kailangan natin maka come up ng apat para sa Mindanao," he stated.

[So what we did today was we selected three farmer nominees representing the province of Lanao del Norte and actually all the five provinces under region 10 will also do the same. In the end, four farmer representatives from Mindanao, Luzon and Visayas will be the 12 names that will be sent to the President for him to choose who will sit. We are going through the selection process because we need to come up with four for Mindanao.]

According to him, all the provinces in Northern Mindanao have conducted the selection process except for Misamis Oriental which plans to hold the same next week.

The Lanao del Norte nominees are Marivic Bacote from the Mahayahay Smaoo Coconut Farmers Organization of the municipality of Maigo, Mohammad Khalid Casan from Ragonan Farmers Association of the municipality of Baloi, and Carmelito Sipalay of Robocon Small Coconut Farmers Association of the municipality of Linamon.

Meanwhile, Octobre called on coconut farmers in the region to register in the government’s National Coconut Farmers Registry System (NCFRS).

"Kung meron kayong capacity, pumunta kayo sa opisina ng PCA or may online platforms na pwede kayong mag access. Ang importante maregister kayo kasi kung wala ang pangaln nito sa registry hindi kayo makatanggap ng mga benepsyo galing sa coconut levy," he added.

[If you have the capacity, go to the PCA office or there are online platforms that you can access. It is important that you register because if your name is not in the registry, you will not be able to receive benefits from the coconut levy.] (APB/PIA-ICIC)
