Courage of Filipino war veterans serves as a challenge to defeat COVID-19

PAGADIAN CITY, April 11 –-The stories of courage of World War II Filipino veterans inspire us to overcome coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Thus disclosed Colonel Randolf Sino Cruz, Assistant Division Commander for Retirees and Reservist Affairs of the 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division, Philippine Army during the 79th Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) celebration held at the Veterans' Marker, City Hall complex here.

Sino Cruz who represents MajGen Generoso Ponio, the Tabak commander in his message said that this year’s celebration of ‘Araw ng Kagitingan’ carrying the theme “Kagitingan ay Gawing Gabay, Pandemya ay Mapagtatagumpayan”  serves as a reminder to all of us the courage and determination of how our Filipino veterans defend our country and we will also be able to overcome COVID-19.

He said that we pay tribute to the soldiers of our country who fought and died 79 years ago during the Battle of Bataan where our soldiers suffered the most from the Japanese soldiers.

"Let's take them as an example and serve as a guide so that we can have the courage and fight this pandemic," Sino Cruz said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Samuel Co said that this year’s “Araw ng Kagitingan” celebration is different from previous years as we face and fight against COVID-19.

Co said that with the outbreak of the pandemic, the entire country was subjected to a state of public health emergency which is why we have been wearing face masks till now and strictly continue to adhere to health and safety protocols.

Co added that national government officials led by President Rodrigo Duterte down to local level are working hand in hand in our fight against this deadly virus.

Co proudly announced that in the ongoing fight against the local government, personnel of the city’s public and private hospitals including doctors, nurses, midwives and utilities and all frontliners of the city government have been vaccinated. .

The mayor also urged the people of the city especially barangay officials to help the government implement the COVID-19 vaccination program to achieve the desired ‘herd immunity’ and no one will be infected with the deadly virus. (NBE/GCC/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur)
