‘Capiztahan’ showcases heroism

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, April 16 (PIA) – This year’s Capiztahan celebration to mark the 120th founding anniversary of the civil government of the province from April 15 to 17 anchors on the Filipinos' heroism through generations.

Governor Esteban Evan Contreras, in a message during an online musical tribute dubbed “Baganihan 3,” underscored the victory of Lapulapu against Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan in 1521 as the highest form of nationalism and love of country.

Baganihan means hero or heroic. It is also the province's participation in the 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines.

“Today, thru music, we commemorate their heroism and celebrate the victory of our new heroes - our Overseas Filipino Workers,” he stressed, referring to the provincial government’s 90-minute performances for the Filipino migrant workers.

“To our Capiznon workers who have lost their overseas employment and to all those who still are and choose to remain abroad despite the pandemic, we are in the midst of so much uncertainty but let us not fear,” he added.

The Governor also related the forefathers and OFWs' heroism to the COVID-19 frontliners who have been working to keep others safe from the disease.

A tribute for the frontliners was also produced by the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office in the Baganihan 1 performances in time with the 122nd Philippine Independence Day Celebration last year.

The sequel of the online concert which capped the month-long celebration of the Provincial Tourism Month last September was again dedicated to the province’s anti COVID-19 campaign heroes with the performances of the frontliners themselves and provincial government officials led by led by Contreras and vice-governor Jaime Magbanua, among others.

“Together we will defeat COVID-19. We will emerge victorious. We will have a COVID-19 free Capiz,” Contreras stressed, adding that “the victory of the past and humanity of our forefathers are a constant reminder to all of us that no foreign power, no natural calamity, no pandemic can destroy the Filipino spirit.”

The Capiztahan will also feature Saot Capiz or the Capisnon Folkdance Performance Showcase as well as Competition on April 16 and 17.

The civil or provincial government of Capiz was created by virtue of Act 115 on April 15, 1901. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
