BAGUIO CITY, April 23(PIA) - - The Bureau of Internal Revenue – Cordillera (BIR – CAR) reported  around P5.2 billion in revenue collection for taxable year 2020, surpassing its target of P4.68 billion by 11.10 percent.

Baguio City contributed the biggest revenue collection with P2.68 billion, followed by Benguet with P820.34M, Kalinga and Apayao with P657.47M, Abra with P449.67M, Ifugao with P316.09M and Mountain Province with P281.94M.

BIR – CAR Regional Director Douglas Rufino, in a Kapihan media forum here, explained that compared to taxable year 2019, lower targets were set for 2020 and this year due to the Coronavirus disease pandemic.

In 2019 before the COVID – pandemic, BIR – CAR Revenue collection was around P6.45B.

Rufino shared that there were industries or businesses affected by the implementation of community quarantines especially during the enhanced CQ period in 2020 such as the hotel and restaurant industry, English or foreign language schools, boarding houses and public transportations. But there were also those that thrive such as pharmaceuticals, market and food industries, hardwares and infrastructure projects.

He assured that they will continue to do their best in doing their mandate of achieving the revenue collection targets.

In this time of pandemic, Rufino outlined the importance of compliant attitude of taxpayers in helping the government in the fight against COVID – 19.

“Paying the correct taxes is the highest form of patriotism during this time,” he said.

BIR -CAR Assistant Regional Director Emmanuel Ferrer Jr also encouraged those going into business, big or small and even online, to register to BIR  as aside from ensuring a legal business, it is also for the protection of their customers.

Ferrer supported Rufino’s call for paying correct taxes and paying on time regardless if big or small amount. “Even as ordinary citizens, through the taxes we pay, we can already help the government in the war against this pandemic,” he said. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
