PRRD leads historic joint NTF-RTF8 ELCAC meeting in Tacloban

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, March 22 (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday led the joint meeting of the National Task Force and the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-RTF8 ELCAC) held at the Summit Hotel in this city to renew the government’s commitment to end communist insurgency in the region.

As he spoke to the local chief executives in Eastern Visayas, the President lauded the NTF-ELCAC and the regional task force for the efforts in support of the government’s campaign against insurgency through the whole-of-nation approach as he assured the people of the continuous support in this fight to secure a genuine and lasting peace for the country.

“I also commend the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict as well as the regional task forces for taking strides to the government’s fight against the communist insurgency through the whole-of-the nation approach and the delivery of basic services to the vulnerable communities in conflict areas,” he said.

The President believes that the problem of insurgency cannot be solved overnight. Thus, he asked for the cooperation and solidarity of all sectors of society to end this armed conflict.

He also emphasized the importance of people’s participation in the implementation of various programs of the government highlighting the Barangay Development Program, the nationwide banner program of the NTF-ELCAC.

According to the President, the Barangay Development Program was implemented not only to address local communist armed conflict but also to improve the welfare of the citizens in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

In the region, several barangays will be given the package of projects under the BDP in 2021.

Each of these barangays will receive a package of development programs worth Php20-M.

In the said meeting, the President also led the ceremonial distribution of 2,334 hectares of agricultural land to over a thousand Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries under the land reform program of the Department of Agrarian Reform.

The President was joined by Senator Bong Go, Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino, NTF-ELCAC Vice-Chair and National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr., CORDS 8 Chair Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario, and NTF-ELCAC Executive Director Allen Capuyan. PCOO Undersecretary Lorraine Badoy of the Strategic Communications Cluster of NTF-ELCAC, and some cabinet members.

The President’s visit to Eastern Visayas was the second leg of his nationwide meetings with local chief executives of the Barangay Development Program (BDP).

The first was held in Cagayan de Oro in Region 10 where he also led the consultation and dialogue with local chief executives and other stakeholders.

This is also the first time that the President visited the city since the COVID-19 pandemic. (ldl/CBA/PIA-8)
