QUEZON CITY, Mar. 9 (PIA)  -- The Philippines ranked number 1 in Asia as the Most Gender Equal Nation and number 16 in the world in closing the gender gap at work based on the World Economic Forum Global Gender Report of 2020, Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Harry Roque, Jr. said in a press briefing yesterday which was also the observance of International Women’s Day.

“Ang Pilipinas lang ang nag-iisang bansa [sa Asya] na nasa top 20. Ang sumunod na ay ang bansang Laos na nasa #43, (The Philippines is the only country [in Asia] to be included in the top 20 rankings followed by Laos at 43rd),” Roque said, emphasizing that this happened during the Duterte Administration.

Roque reiterated President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s message during the kick-off ceremony of Women’s Month, saying that it is right to uplift women's role in society by empowering every Filipina to break the long-time barriers that prevent women from achieving their goals.

“Gaya ng sinabi ni Presidente, itaas ang mga kababaihan sa nararapat nilang lugar sa lipunan sa pagbibigay lakas sa bawat Pilipina (women empowerment), para mabasag ang mga hadlang na matagal nang pumigil para marating nila ang kanilang potential,” Roque said.

Roque also added that women empowerment breaks down the old thinking and backward mindset that popularizes gender oppression and inequality for women.

He added that as proof of the administration’s support for women, the President signed into law Republic Act 11210 or known as the 105 Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law and Republic At 11148, or known as the “Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act.”

Moreover, when he was still a mayor, President Duterte strictly implemented women’s rights in family planning as well as protection of women against violence. (MBP/PIA-IDPD)
