LGU Ormoc City, Philippine Red Cross sign MOA on use of Apheresis Machine

TACLOBAN CITY, Mar 22 (PIA) - The City Government of Ormoc through Mayor Richard Gomez and the Philippine Red Cross through Chair and CEO Senator Richard Gordon virtually signed a Memorandum of Agreement and turnover of Apheresis Machine, today, March 22, 2021.

It was learned that there was an increased demand for blood since 2019 due to Dengue cases. When this was brought to the attention of the Mayor by the Ormoc City Red Cross Chapter led by Atty. Ari Larrazabal, the City Mayor and the Ormoc City Sangguniang Panglungsod facilitated the procurement of the Apheresis Machine and the necessary  supplies in the amount of P3 million.

An Apheresis Machine is a device which receives blood removed from a patient or donor’s body and separates it into its various components: plasma, platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. Depending on the reason for apheresis, one of these components is isolated and collected by the instrument, while the others are returned to the body.

The machine is turned over to the Ormoc City Blood Bank being managed by the Philippine Red Cross Ormoc City Chapter, after the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between PRC and LGU Ormoc.

In his message, Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez made the request for the Ormoc City Blood Bank to service not only the needs of the people of Ormoc City but those outside the city like the nearby municipalities of Leyte province like Kananga, Merida, Jaro, and many others.

Senator Richard Gordon, in his inspirational message said the guiding principle is “to reach as many people that we can.” He cited the LGU Ormoc for its support to the Philippine Red Cross through the provision of Apheresis Machines.

He lauded the humanitarian efforts of the LGU Ormoc in finding ways to enhance and to widen the services of PRC in Ormoc City.

"I always support initiatives like that because the object is to serve as many people as we can by alleviating human suffering,"  Chariman Gordon said.

“When you have leaders like Mayor Gomez, masarap tulungan ang tumutulong sa sarili.”

He urged everyone to be a Red Cross Volunteer.

Currently, Ormoc City Blood Center is the only Red Cross Blood Center with Apheresis Machine, it was learned.

Senator Gordon was joined during the launching by PRC Secretary General Elizabeth Zavalla and Christie Monina Nalupta. Mayor Gomez was joined by the City Administrator Vince Emnas and other city officials and the PRC Ormoc Chapter officials. (PIA-8)
