Irrigators group receives mungbean seeds from DA

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela, March 4 (PIA) - The Department of Agriculture (DA) - 2 through the Cagayan Valley Research Center (CVRC) has handed at least 750 kilograms of open pollinated variety of mungbean seeds to Cansan - Cabagan Irrigators Association (CCIA).

DA-CVRC chief Engr. William V. Contillo said the distribution of the said seeds is under the High-Value Crops and Development Program (HVCDP) of the DA.

The mungbean seeds that were handed should be planted and encouraged all farmers in the said place to venture into mungbean production other than palay.

“We hope that these seeds can encourage more farmers to venture into rice-mungbean technology and serve as additional income of farmers,” Contillo said.

Christopher Cureg, president of CCIA said that they were encouraged by Gov. Rodolfo Albano III to plant mungbean after harvesting palay to have additional income.

Albano's encouragement, he said, was accepted by the group and they asked the help of the Municipal Agriculture Office for assistance to realize the planting of mungbean in their area.

Meanwhile, Cabagan OIC Municipal Agriculturist Venancio Fugaban said his team visited the municipality of San Mateo, the Mungbean Capital of the country, to learn from its farmers on the applied technology in growing mungbean.

“We are eyeing to allot about 70 hectares for rice-mungbean," Fugaban.

He also said his office will invite more farmers to join the association to improve the quality of their lives and help fix the soil quality in rice fields. (BME/MGE/PIA 2-Isabela)
