Farmers continue to receive aid from Bambang LGU, various agencies

BAMBANG, Nueva Vizcaya, March 10 (PIA) – Farmers who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic here continue to receive assistance from the local government in partnership with the national government agencies, Mayor Pepito Balgos said.

As an agricultural town where 60 to 70 percent of its population are engaged on rice and vegetable farming, Balgos said various assistance such as agri-inputs and cash aid were given to the farmers since last year to help them cope with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"Our farmers are struggling due to the low prices of rice and other agricultural products. Right now our tomato farmers suffered due to the low price of the product that is why we need the assistance of the national and regional line agencies," Balgos said.

Bambang hosts the Nueva Vizcaya Agricultural Terminal (NVAT) where vegetable and fruit supplies from the Cordillera and other regions are being traded.

The mayor also bared that P24 million of their budget for the construction of the vegetable section of their public market has been realigned for COVID-19 assistance programs and activities last year.

He further said that they have also established the 15 hectare Bambang Integrated Agri-Tourism and Learning Site (BIATALS) to provide farmers with alternative livelihood opportunities and boost the food supply in the municipality.

The BIATALS, Balgos said serves as Demonstration Farm for organic, livestock, agri-tourism and skills learning with the establishment of a Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Center.

"We cannot do this alone, we need the support of the national government to help our farmers who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic," he said. (MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
