E. Samar guv urged Estehanons to emulate ancestors’ humanity 500 years ago

BORONGAN CITY, March 21 (PIA) – Governor Ben Evardone urged the people of Eastern Samar to emulate the same spirit that their ancestors displayed 500 years ago.

This Evardone said during the unveiling of the 3rd historical marker in Ngolos, Guiuan, E. Samar on March 18 as the nation commemorated its quincentennial year of the First Circumnavigation of the World.

Barangay Ngolos is located some 123 kilometers south of Borongan City, the province’s capital city.

The government through the National Historical Institute of the Philippines (NHIP) and the National Quincentennial Committee with the LGU E. Samar and LGU Guiuan marked the first events in the historical islands of Suluan and Homonhon.

The governor extolled the hospitality and humanity of the ancestors from Suluan whose kindness prevailed over their apprehension of the intruders’ purpose in their domain.

He went on to narrate that the Suluanons discovered in the nearby Homonhon the weary, sick, and hungry crew of Magellan where they brought food, water and even helped the healthier ones care for their sick.

The expedition had been sailing for months with scarce provisions and the sighting of land was a relief for them.

Had our ancestors ignored the intruders, the expedition could have halted in there and the expedition could have failed, but the humanity and magnanimity of our ancestors prevailed, he said.

Our ancestors displayed their kindness despite them being strangers, they spoke a different language, perhaps follow a different religion, but they showed love and compassion instead, Evardone said.

"Let us emulate the same spirit that our ancestors displayed half a millennia ago. Let us show our compassion to those who are in need most especially those who are losing hope because of the COVID-19 pandemic."

President Rodrigo Duterte graced the occasion as the guest of honor. The president was joined by Senator Bong Go, Secretary Silvestre Bello of DOLE, Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, Presidential Adviser for Visayas Michael Dino, Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya of DILG and Postmaster General Norman Fulgencio, along with Spanish Ambassador Jorge Sanchez, Polish Ambassador Karoslaw Szczepankiewics and a host of local government officials of Guiuan town and the province of E. Samar. (nbq/PIA E. Samar)
