DA to roll out info caravan on brown plant hopper, other pests

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, March 20 (PIA) -  The Department of Agriculture (DA) here has lined up series of information caravan on the  infestation of Brown Plant Hopper and other plant pests in Cagayan Valley.

As of March 15, 2021, around 86.74 hectares in the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya were already affected with the infestation .

The caravan aims to train farmer leaders, local farmer technicians and DA new technical staff on plant pests identification, diagnosis and management.

According to Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulatory Rose Mary G. Aquino, the first caravan which will be held at the Southern Cagayan Research Center in Iguig, Cagayan will equip the participants in correctly detecting and identifying pests and diseases concerning the region's important and high value crops like rice, corn and vegetables.

Earlier, the DA - Regional Crop Protection Management Center conducts an orientation and field demonstration in the application of a metarhizium, a bio-control agent, to brown planthopper affected rice areas in Isabela. 

Meanwhile, DA urged farmers to  become vigilant as there are three major corn pests this season aside from the brown plant hopper to include the cutworm, fall armyworm and corn borer which are considered the most destructive pests currently invading corn fields here in the Cagayan Valley this planting season.

Farmers are advised to report possible occurrence of such worms in their area so that the department will provide immediate control action.

As of March 15, a total estimated losses of 151.27 metric tons is recorded by DA amounting to Php2.87 million. (MDCT/GVB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
