DA offers Repopulation Program for hog raisers

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, March 20 (PIA) - The Department of Agriculture (DA) will be offering Repopulation Program for hog raisers to increase the supply of pork in Cagayan Valley region.

Nueva Vizcaya Experimental Station Officer-In-Charge Arsenio Apostol said the Repopulation Program will be implemented among hog raisers through clustering with a minimum of 50 to 60 farmers.

"This is one of our programs to help our hog raisers to recover and to increase the hog population in the region," he said.

The African Swine Fever (ASF) that wrecked havoc in the region has severely affected hog raisers, causing the DA in Cagayan Valley to roll out Php21 million assistance for immediately affected and Php75 million more for directly affected hog raisers since last year.

DA reported last week that the region had only 262,000 hog population in 2020 compared with the 400,000 population in 2019 due to the ASF.

In Nueva Vizcaya, only the towns of Alfonso Castaneda, Dupax del Sur and Bambang remain free from the ASF infection. (MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
