960 beneficiaries receive DSWD livelihood grants

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, March 24 (PIA) -- Some 960 individuals who were severely affected by the global pandemic received livelihood grants as aid from the office of the 3rd Congressional District through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 2.

Representative Joseph Lasam-Lara said that each beneficiary received from P5,000 to P10,000 cash grants, patterned from the Social Amelioration Program of the government and is intended for those who lost jobs and livelihoods to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

He stated that the program will help affected families to re-establish their respective livelihood activities.

"We know that this pandemic greatly affected the lives of our people, likewise our economy. [The economy] is really down because of the restrictions set by the government to contain the further spread of the virus. That is why we intended to give this assistance to help affected families," Lara said.

He also stated that he sponsored 218 scholars enrolled in various programs of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) to provide the needed skills for self-employment or employment purposes.

Meanwhile, Juan Zalun of the DSWD urged the beneficiaries to use the grants in accordance to their purpose of establishing their respective livelihood programs so that they could earn for their families amid the pandemic. 

"There will be social welfare officers who will do the monitoring so that we can assess if you really used the grant [according to] its very purpose," he said. 

He further said that the DSWD will further look for other programs that will help other individuals who were also affected by the global pandemic. (JKC/OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
