PASIG CITY, Feb. 19 (PIA) -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through its TB Platforms for Sustainable Detection, Care and Treatment Project, implemented by University Research Co. (URC) LLC, further strengthened collaboration with government media--Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and Radyo Pilipinas--to raise public awareness on tuberculosis (TB) education and encourage local chief executives to strengthen TB response amid COVID-19.

The partnership started in March 2020 during the start of the COVID-19 community quarantine.

According to USAID TB Platforms, three Filipinos die of TB every hour even before the COVID-19 pandemic and during this most challenging time. USAID’s TB Platforms encourages local government units and health facilities to ensure continuous provision of TB diagnosis, care and treatment in communities.

With support from the Regional Centers for Health Development, USAID’s TB Platforms technical staff, along with its partner local government units led by the municipal/city mayors and governors, and with TB doctors and nurse coordinators continue to act as resource persons for various radio programs produced by Radyo Pilipinas in Batangas, Lucena, Manila, Central Luzon and Marawi City.

Likewise, the Philippine Information Agency continues to publish TB education materials and news features on active case finding (ACF) activities for TB which targets high-risk groups which include senior citizens, diabetics and stakeholders under the Pantawid ng Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

According to USAID’s TB Platforms Social and Behavior Change Communications Specialist Diwata Paredes, “the full support of PIA and Radyo Pilipinas helps the project reach out to as many Filipinos via its online publication, radio broadcast and Facebook live streaming events.”

Paredes added that the number of public engagements through social media generated through PIA and Radyo Pilipinas helps bring the life stories of TB survivors so they can inspire TB patients to adhere and finish treatment and families of those presumed to have TB to seek diagnosis for proper treatment to be able to protect their communities to be infected with TB.

USAID also continues to provide technical assistance to the Department of Health’s National Tuberculosis Control Program (NTP) as the project team collaborates with the regional centers for health development in Central Luzon (Region 3), Calabarzon, (Region 4-A), National Capital Region (NCR) which are the top three regions highly burdened of TB. USAID’s TB Platforms also provides special technical assistance to the local government of Marawi City.

With the coverage of PIA and the reach of Radyo Pilipinas, USAID hopes to further raise public awareness on what are the common TB symptoms, how and where to access TB services in communities and why it is important that community members help reduce the stigma of the disease. TB patients along with their families need the full support of their local government unit, health facility and the whole community during their TB journey.

In addition, #EndTB Ambassadors Asia’s Multimedia Star Alden Richards and Miss Earth 2019 Janelle Lazo Tee, in several occasions were featured by PIA highlighting their contributions to the project’s community outreach and social behavior change communication campaigns. (PIA NCR)
