Surigao Norte mayor vows to put an end to insurgency

BUTUAN CITY, Feb. 18 (PIA) -- Shedding light on insurgency, Mayor Karissa Fetalvero-Paronia of Sison, Surigao del Norte  is determined to put an end on the persistent insurgency-related incidents in the municipality together with the town’s people and the police and armed forces.

“It has been almost 52 years since this country first faced the problems brought by the communist-terrorist groups. In those years, countless lives and homes were lost, many of them were our lumads,” the mayor said during an interview with Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Sec. Martin Andanar for the Network Briefing News, which she served as the program guest on Tuesday, February 16.

“This has been a problem of the Philippines brought by the aforementioned organization and based on history, it only resulted in a disruption in our economy [hindering] the progress of our country,” she added.

Her fervour for addressing insurgency in the town was fuelled even more after the attack made by the communist-terrorist group New People’s Army (NPA) on January 28. Shots were fired at the mayor’s residence at 8:06 A.M. Minutes later, at around 8:15 A.M., a similar attack was made to the Sison Municipal Police Station.

The local government and the police forces expressed strong condemnation for the group due to the attack, which could have compromised the lives of the elderlies who were gathered near the municipal hall to claim their pensions.

Cases have already been filed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) against the identified terrorists responsible for the attack.

The rampant terrorism-related crimes forged stronger ties between the local government, the PNP, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). This cooperation resulted in the apprehension of the fourth most wanted criminal in the region on February 6 in one of the town villages.

Though the battle is far from over, the mayor is optimistic that insurgency will cease in Sison, especially with the current administration in the forefront.

“With the help of our uniformed personnel from the PNP and the AFP, especially the thrust of the EO [Executive Order] 70 of President Duterte together with the Anti-Terrorism Act, rest assured that we will solve this insurgency,” said Paronia. (DMNR/PIA-Caraga)
