Pagadian urges youth to be advocates of children’s rights

PAGADIAN CITY, Feb 26 (PIA) - The provincial government has placed great emphasis on protecting the rights of children to prevent cases of abuse, violence and discrimination against them.

This was what Ermelina Bacatan, the Provincial Social Welfare Officer, disclosed during the one-day youth symposium held recently at the Executive Function Hall, Capitol Complex, Pagadian City which carries the theme 'Safe Space for Children and Youth'.

Bacatan said the provincial government through the PSWD is always focused on developing and protecting the rights of children.

She  added that all children, irrespective of their economic status, race, color, religion, ethnic or social origin, disability, birth or any other status have the same rights and they are entitled and protected by the state.

"Everywhere and anywhere, children should be protected so that they can develop their full potential and they can contribute to society and become positive agents for change," Bacatan said.

She said the orientation of 60 youths in Pagadian City will help the government advocate for children’s rights.

In a similar development, Thicks Gapor, Jr., the manager of the Kalamboan Project said they are partnering with PSWDO to educate and inform the youth on the basic rights of children.

Gapor added that the literacy program was attended by 60 deprived, excluded and vulnerable youth from the coastal barangays in Pagadian City so that they would be aware of the ten rights of children.

“At the event, they were informed of the rights of the children and the means by which appropriate government office they would report if they found any child abuse to occur in their respective barangays,” Gapor explained.

He hopes that the youth will be advocates for the government to promote and protect the rights of the children to strengthen the child protection system in the province.

The literacy program, is the second batch held in the city where the first batch was attended by 40 youth participants from the coastal barangays. (RVC/GCC/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
