Many households in region not safety-conscious

DAVAO CITY Feb. 17 (PIA) An officer of the Bureau of Fire Protection in Davao Region observed many households in Davao Region are security- conscious but not safety-conscious.

Fire Superintendent Alex Pamaybay, District Fire Marshall of the Bureau of Fire Protection XI said that  the many Filipinos have the propensity of ensuring that their windows and doors are well-locked but failed to consider their safety once a fire in the building breaks out.

He stressed households must make sure that residents therein can come out in case of emergency.

“Residents must use a system that they can easily escape from their house once fire breaks out by using easy to manipulate locks and door knobs so that they can easily go out from the burning building,” Pamaybay said.

He welcomed the proposal to subject every household to fire safety inspection in the same way government and private establishments are assessed yearly.

Pamaybay said it is a must to check on the electrical wirings and the circuitry in every residential house, especially those that are just assumed for occupation.

According to Pamaybay,  houseld owners must be wary of the electrical load intended for every dwelling.

He stressed the importance of the knowledge that the electrical load in every household must be tantamount to the number of electrical appliances.

“The fire caused by electrical short circuit is so fast that it melts even the coating of the electrical wire aggravated mainly by the meeting of exposed positive and negative wirings,” Pamaybay said

He said that it pays to check the accuracy of the wirings and the load given the number of appliances in a household.

Pamaybay bared that 70 percent of the fire incident in the city is caused by electrical short circuit.

He said it pains even for firefighters to see fire incidents with dead victims.

“It hard for us to sleep with the experience,” Pamaybay said.

The Office of Civil Defense XI reported the death of four persons composed of three minors and an adult while two minors were injured in a fire incident that happened 3:47 am on February 15, 2021 in La Verna Hills, Barangay Cabantian, Buhangin this city razing one house and damaged partially a laundry shop.
