Lawmen uproot P3M worth of Marijuana plants in Ilocos

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Feb. 14 (PIA) - - Joint operatives from the police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) have uprooted an estimated P3 million worth of Marijuana plants in the mountainous areas in Sugpon, Ilocos Sur.

The lawmen discovered the three Marijuana plantation sites in their three-day operations on February 9–11 in Barangays Danac and Licungan, both in Sugpon town.

Police Lieutenant Jerry Arzabal, the Sugpon town's chief of police,  said the three plantations were located in the disputed boundary between the provinces Ilocos Sur and Benguet of the Cordillera Administration Region (CAR).

“Our Marijuana eradication operation is continuing even at this time of COVID-19 pandemic as part of our campaign to reduce illegal drug supply from the countryside,” said Arzabal.

The operating lawmen uprooted and burned at least 4,050 pieces of fully-grown Marijuana plants in the first plantation discovered with an area of 750 square meters.

In the second site with an area of 1,500 square meters, the authorities destroyed 4,300 pieces of fully-grown Marijuana plants while the third site has an area of 550 square meters and yielded at least 2,750 full-grown Marijuana plants and 3,000 grams of dried Marijuana plants fruiting tops.

Based on the standard set by the Dangerous Drug Board (DDB), Arzabal said that the total estimated worth of the destroyed Marijuana plants is at P3.080 million.

He said that samples from the uprooted Marijuana plants were turned-over to PDEA Region 1 Agent Marlon A. Apolog for documentation and proper disposition.

“We are presently conducting a follow-up probe to the identities of the cultivators of the Marijuana plants that allegedly planted in October last year,” he said.

Meanwhile, two policemen who were slightly injured while they were hiking the slippery terrain to reach the sites were immediately brought to Tagudin General Hospital for immediate treatment. (JCR/FGL, PIA 1)
