KBP's role cited for success of Laging Handa, PCOO chief says

PAGADIAN CITY, Feb 17 (PIA) —The national government has given great importance to its good relations with the private media in the successful dissemination of important information in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) chief Secretary Jose Roperto Martin Andanar said during his recent live radio guesting on the program "Express Balita" at DXPR radio station here that the private media through the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) has been active in assisting the government in delivering the government's response efforts against COVID-19.

Andanar said that in June 2016  the PCOO established the Laging Handa Crisis Communication Council to be responsible for delivering fast and very important information especially during emergencies such as disasters, health crises, and others.

Andanar recalled that at the start of the lockdown in March last year, PCOO institutionalized the Laging Handa Network Briefing to broadcast on television and social media platforms the steps taken by the government against COVID-19 so that it can be heard directly and seen by people.

During the Laging Handa program, the PCCO chief interviewed local chief executives, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials, and radio news anchors in all regions of the country to strengthen the government and media communication network.

"This is the first time in Philippine broadcast history that in the wake of a major health crisis, the government and private media have come together to inform the people of the minimum health protocols and response efforts made by the government," Andanar proudly announced.

Andanar  said the KBP has been very active in collaborating with PCOO in broadcasting government-sponsored activities and in order to reach the farthest barangays in the country.

"In the Laging Handa Network Briefing,  people are given the opportunity to talk and express their activities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as their suggestions to the government so that they too can feel the presence of government,” he explained.

The PCCO chief added that the simulcast of the private media in the ‘Laging Handa’ program has greatly accelerated the dissemination of government information and public service announcements.

“I am very grateful to KBP for their very active support and cooperation because through them the dissemination of information is very fast. If the broadcasting of important information is only entrusted to the government, I strongly believe that it will not be possible because the government owns only few radio stations,” Andanar concluded.
