PIA to go high in explaining gov’t policies, programs

CEBU CITY, Jan. 5 (PIA) – Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Director-General, Undersecretary Ramon Cualoping III, said the agency will go beyond informing and explain the policies of the government to avoid misinformation and disinformation.

Cualoping said that with technology, news and information spread faster in today’s digital age.

“But the same online platform, especially social media, has been widely used as an avenue to sow fake news,” said Cualoping.

He explained that as the official information support arm of the government, it is incumbent upon PIA’s mandate to go a step further in communicating the programs, services, policies, and the agenda of the Duterte Administration.

Appointed as the new PIA chief in August 2020, Cualoping, who hails from Davao, said that under his leadership, PIA will strengthen its engagement and partnership with the public and private stakeholders to ensure the massive dissemination of timely, accurate, and relevant information.

He emphasized the need to bring the right information to the grassroots level, especially in this time of the pandemic so the people will know what their government is doing.

“This time of pandemic has also given PIA its best and appropriate time to perform its mandate, and that is to communicate and inform as well as explain government’s efforts and initiatives. PIA is very active especially down to the countryside with regional offices and provincial centers throughout the country,” said Cualoping.

During a visit to Cebu last month, Cualoping stressed in local radio interviews that PIA will curate content, create content, and engage with the media and other stakeholders to better explain government policies and programs.

At the same time, the media and other stakeholders can become partners of PIA in communicating the right information to the public, he added.

During the Cebu visit, Cualoping also met with Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes to discuss the initiatives done in both cities in preventing the community transmission of COVID-19. (hfg/PIA7)
