DOH readies MR-OPV immunization activity in SoLeyte

MAASIN CITY, Jan. 20 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) is set for the conduct of Measles Rubella - Oral Polio Vaccine (MR-OPV) Supplemental Immunization in the province of Southern Leyte this February 2021.

“This is above and beyond the regular vaccination programs of the health department,” Provincial Health Officer I Dr. Jean Marie Uy said during the Special Kapihan program Tuesday, January 19, 2021, held at the PIA Southern Leyte Provincial Office.

She said that even with the current pandemic, a high-quality immunization activity should be urgently given to the target children 0-59 months old for Oral Polio Vaccine and 9-59 months old for Measles Rubella.

This is to avert a possible measles outbreak in communities and the ongoing polio recirculation.

Trainings of health personnel, information campaign/dissemination, are ongoing to encourage parents to send their children to the specific venues identified by the local health authorities and the scheduled dates of immunization.

Meanwhile, in Maasin City alone, DOH projected around 7,739 children 9-59 months old to be vaccinated with Measles Rubella and 8,956 for 0-59 months old for OPV, DOH-Development Management Officer IV Dr. Letecia O. Tan said.

She said each barangay already submitted their own strategy including the specific areas that will be identified.

Tan added that the Nurses Deployment Program - Human Resources for Health (NDP-HRH) will assist the local health workers in the vaccination activities.

She said in order to be protected against COVID-19 infections during the immunization activities, minimum health protocols will be implemented and the healthcare workers will be provided with Personal Protective Equipment. (ldl/rgc/PIA8-SLeyte)
