DA-10: High pork demand causes price increase in Normin

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 22 (PIA)--As the current number one pork supplier in the country, a lot of traders from Luzon, Visayas, and other regions in Mindanao are offering competitive prices to the region's hog raisers, thus, the price increase of pork meat in northern Mindanao.

"Ang pagsaka sa presyo sa baboy mahulog nga artificial nga pagsaka. Sigun sa monitoring report ug sa report gikan sa local government units ug sa atong program directory, ang northern Mindanao dili mabalaka. As of ending of December 2020, bastante atong suplay sa baboy," Department of Agriculture (DA)-10 Regional Technical Director for Operations Carlota Madriaga said in a press conference, January 22.

(The price increase of pork can be considered as 'artificial increase.' Based on the monitoring report and the reports from the local government units, and from our program directory, northern Mindanao should not be worried. As of end of December, we have enough supply of pork)

As of January 21, the regional technical director said a kilogram of pork shoulder meat and pork belly are being sold for P270-300 on average while live hog is priced at P170 per kilo from commercial businesses and P135 per kilo from backyard farms.

Madriaga further added that Northern Mindanao Hog Raisers (NorMinHog) will seek ways to regulate the prices especially for consumers in the region.

Meanwhile, with about 600 percent pork sufficiency in the region, DA Sec. William Dar urges the region to provide more supply in Metro Manila and other regions to stabilize the commodity's price.

Support to hog raisers

To aid hog raisers especially those with hogs affected by African Swine Fever (ASF), DA-10 offers insurance for farmers through the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).

Paying only P225 per head, a farmer could already claim P10,000 for their affected swine. For backyard hog raisers, DA-10 offers free insurance as long as the farmer is registered with the premium registry for basic sector for agriculture.

For those who have not registered yet, interested backyard hog raisers will just have to coordinate with their respective municipal, city or provincial veterinary offices.

Aside from the said insurance for hogs, DA-10 also provides indemnification cash assistance where affected raisers could get P5,000 per culled animal.

In containing the spread of animal diseases, Madriaga said DA-10 has a laboratory to analyze samples. Thus, she urges hog raisers and other concerned stakeholders to coordinate with their respective provincial veterinary offices if there are samples needed to be analyzed.

To boost capacity, NorMinHog donated reagents used to analyze viral infection of ASF to DA. “Nacontain na nato ang sakit sa Iligan City (We have already contained the disease in Iligan City),” Madriaga added. (RTP/PIA10)
