Lapuyan BION vows to firm up gov't on-ground communication

LAPUYAN, Zamboanga del Sur, Dec 15 (PIA) - In order to strengthen communication at the grassroots level, the local government of Lapuyan town held the municipal launching and orientation of the Barangay Information Officers ’Network (BION) recently.

Mayor Joel Sulong praised the PIA for its initiative with the active support of the provincial government in setting up BION in their town.

“I commend and thank the PIA, provincial government and DILG for setting up BION here in the town for the second time. I hope that through this communication network, we will no longer fall victims to fake news especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Sulong said.

Sulong observed that the spread of fake news on social media not only affected their town but also affected the whole country which caused people to be alarmed and scared.

The Mayor also cited one of the reasons for the suicide of a grade 9 student at Lapuyan National High School last month because he was also the victim of fake news, "so it is time to stop spreading fake news. "

Provincial Information Officer Jesrel Himang also urged the BION members to take the lead in spreading the truth to their respective barangays.

"We have a strategy to be used where you can be the source of real and legitimate information in your respective barangays," Himang said.

Himang added that through BION, the delivery of information from the national government will be smoother, especially the action to be taken against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of Executive Order No. 70, which is the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) of President Rodrigo Duterte.

BION members, also sworn in before Mayor Sulong that as a partner of the government, they will faithfully fulfill their duties and responsibilities by disseminating true information and fighting fake news.
