2,300 persons nabbed, 878 brgys drug-cleared in ZamPen

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec 14 (PIA) – Before the year ends, the campaign against illegal drugs continues to run throughout the region and drug-operations are successful despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 health crisis. This, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-9 Regional Director Emerson Margate revealed recently.

"We were able to conduct a total of 1,860 operations that resulted to the arrest of more than 2,300 drug personalities in Zamboanga Peninsula,” Director Margate said during the Kapihan Na Zamboanga recently.

Just this year, with the combined and relentless efforts of the anti-illegal drugs line government agencies to eliminate drugs and make the region ‘drug-free’, dangerous and illicit drugs were confiscated in separate drug operations and were destroyed as per court order.

"Out of the operations, we were able to confiscate 7,000 grams of Metamphetamine HCI or shabu and almost a kilo of marijuana and 30 pieces of marijuana plants in the region,” said the Director.

"The seized ‘shabu’ has a street value of 47.6 million pesos,” he added.

On the other hand, PDEA-9 also shared the challenges they have faced even up to this date, in fortifying the war against illegal drugs through the barangay drug-clearing program as well as in cascading of new amendments in omnibus and other regulations in clearing-up drug affected barangays in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen).

"The barangay drug clearing operations are tedious and risky. It is not easy as it may seem because it requires more time and does not happen overnight as we account each drug personality from pushers to users,” affirmed Margate.

Part of the anti-drug operation strategy is the barangay clearing program where drug personalities were arrested and out of 1,904 barangays throughout the region, 878 barangays have already been drug-cleared.

"We need to stabilize all the barangays by ensuring drugs will not emerge anymore in the community and for parents to always keep an eye on their children,” Margate appealed.

Records show that there are 99 certified unaffected barangays by the drugs ever since and 904 barangays are yet to be cleared.

"The government is always welcoming the drug personalities to surrender and undergo rehabilitation programs for the betterment of all,” Margate disclosed. (RVC/JRA/PIA-Zamboanga City)
