Some metro LGUs, schools declare suspension of classes amid 'Ulysses' aftermath

CALOOCAN CITY, Nov. 16 (PIA) -- Some Metro Manila local government units (LGUs) and some schools and universities on Monday declared the temporary suspension of distance learning due to power interruption and following the aftermath of Typhoon Ulysses.

In a social media post as of 11 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, Ancel Abrenica of the Philippine Information Agency-Monitoring Unit (PMU) said among the LGUs that declared cancellation of classes are the following:

• Caloocan - Up to senior high school, public online classes only, Nov. 16-21 (recently added by the writer)
• Marikina - all levels, public and private, Nov. 16-17
• Pasig City - preschool to senior high school, public and private, Nov. 16-17
• Quezon City - preschool to senior high school in public schools only, Nov. 16-17; upon discretion for private schools

While the schools and universities that also opted to suspend their classes and work, inlcude the following: 

• Adamson University - classes and work, Nov. 16-17
• Ateneo De Manila University - synchronous and asynchronous classes, Nov. 16-21
• Far Eastern University High School - synchronous and asynchronous classes, Nov. 16-20
• Polytechnic University of the Philippines - synchronous and asynchronous classes in all campuses, Nov. 16-27
• University of the Philippines - synchronous and asynchronous activities, Nov. 16-21
• University of Santo Tomas - synchronous and asynchronous classes, Nov. 16-21

To recall, Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio said in September that classes may be cancelled due to power interruption as learners are dependent on online platforms for the distance learning - a mix of online classes and modular due to COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the guideline by DepEd, the local government units (LGUs) have the authority to declare local suspensions.

Meanwhile, cancellation of classes in the tertiary level especially in the private institutions will be at discretion of school administrators. (PIA NCR)
