Cabinet Sec. Nograles lauds Filipina Sambista’s bronze medal finish

DAVAO CITY, Nov. 12 (PIA)- Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles lauded the bronze medal finish of Sydney Sy Tancontion in the recent 2020 World Sambo Championships held in Novi Sad, Serbia.

“As Chair of the Pilipinas Sambo Federation Inc. (PSFI), I am really proud of Sydney’s feat in the world of Sambo, an internationally-practiced combat sport and a recognized style of amateur wrestling,” Nograles said.

Tancontian won over Spain’s Evadne Huecas with the score of 2-1 on November 8 in the Serbian City of Novi Sad to win the bronze medal in the Senior Women’s 80+ kg division. She is the only Southeast Asian Sambista to win a medal in the senior’s division of the World Sambo Championship.

“I am hopeful that Sydney’s win will fuel more interest for our youth to pursue this sport. With this win, I am hopeful that this will lay down the foundation for stronger programs to develop Sambo as a major sport in the Philippines,” Nograles said.

Nograles leads the PSFI, the country’s official governing body for Sambo and recognized by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), the Davao City based National Sporting Association (NSA) was instrumental in debuting Sambo as an official sport in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games hosted by the Philippines.

The Cabinet Secretary said he has high hopes the Filipinos can excel in Sambo with the PSFI leading the way in producing world-class athletes for the sport which originated in Russia.

“Sambo is one sport that Filipinos can truly excel in and I’m really grateful that world-class athletes like Sydney are leading the way. On behalf of the Filipino nation and the PSFI, we thank you Sydney for making us proud. Please keep it up and I promise you that the PSFI is fully behind you.
