DENR exceeds seedling production in Diadi

DIADI, Nueva Vizcaya, Oct. 11 (PIA) - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has exceeded its cloned seedling production in this town as part of their clonal nursery services.

DENR report said that since January this year, the agency through its PENR Office has produced a total of 24,500 seedlings overshooting the target of 20,000 cloned quality planting materials this year.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Edgar Martin said the output was praised by Regional Director Gwendolyn Bambalan in her recent visit to the nursery site.

Part of the inspection was the informal interview with the staff operating the facility.

The planting materials include Narra (Pterocarpus indicus), Tuai (Bischofia javanica), Yakal (Shorea astylosa), Yemane (Gmelina arborea), coffee robusta (Coffea canephora), guyabano (Annona muricata) and cacao (Theobroma cacao).

"These planting materials will be used in replanting areas established under the National Greening Program(NGP) that posted below 85 percent survival rate and graduated from the three-year maintenance and protection period," Martin said.

He further said that the DENR ensures the production of quality planting materials through selection and collection of healthy stem cutting; preparation of collected cuttings; and treatment of collected cuttings.

Preparation of rooting chamber; pricking of treated cuttings into the rooting chamber; and maintenance of cuttings during the rooting period are also done.

After these processes, harvesting of rooted cuttings; transplanting of rooted cuttings into polybags; and hardening and maintenance of cloned planting materials are conducted before the final disposal. (MDCT/BME/PIA 2-Nueva Vizcaya)
